How to Split Excel Sheets into Separate Files
Updated: Jan 2026 • 3 min read
Large Excel files can be a nightmare to manage. Whether you have a 50-sheet workbook or a million-row data dump, learning how to split them is accurate essential skill.
Method 1: Splitting by Sheet
This is common when you have monthly reports (e.g., "Jan", "Feb", "Mar") in one file and need to email them to different departments.
- Open iloveexcel.co and select the Split Tool.
- Upload your multi-sheet workbook.
- Select "Split by Sheets" mode.
- Click Split. You'll get a ZIP file containing each sheet as a standalone .xlsx file.
Method 2: Splitting by Rows
Excel has a row limit (approx 1 million). If you're dealing with massive CSV exports, you often need to chunk them into smaller files (e.g., 1000 rows each) for easier processing.
- Upload your large data file to the Split Tool.
- Select "Split by Rows".
- Enter the number of rows per file (e.g., 500).
- The tool will automatically calculate how many files are needed and generate them instantly.
